Liver spots(Chloasma, Melasma)

Outline

 

Liver spots is a common skin disease causing discoloration with dark brown spots appearing on the face. It often affects people who belong to a race whose skin tone is brown, rather than on Caucasians. Usually, it occurs on the center of the face like the cheeks, forehead and nose as well as the chin. For its treatment, hydroquinone cream is applied and sometimes a local vitamin A, such as tretinoin accompanies the treatment. In order to prevent further expansion of liver spots, try to avoid direct sunlight and apply sun block cream regularly.

 

Definition

 

It is a common skin disease that involves discoloration with brown or dark brown spots of various sizes found on the skin. They appear on the skin that is usually exposed to direct sunlight, mainly the face.

 

Symptoms

 

It is more obvious to the race whose skin tone is brown and common to young females. However, it may occur to males as well. On the areas that are exposed directly to sunlight, such as the face, excessive discoloration that comes in various sizes occurs. The shapes of the spots are circular and irregular.

 

Cause, conditions and physiological

 

Until today, the exact cause has not been discovered. The liver spots are often formed during one’s pregnancy and they naturally go away after giving a birth, but sometimes they remain permanently. They may be formed after menopause as well. If a person takes contraceptives, it could also cause the appearance of liver spots, development of a tumor in the ovary or other diseases related to the endocrine system. Exposure to direct sunlight causes liver spots and worsens the existing spots.

 

Diagnosis

 

It is easily diagnosed with a clinical view, but sometimes, there is a case when it has to be differentiated with other diseases that also cause discoloration on the face. Especially when there has been *** inflammation, a temporary discoloration may happen, and at that time, an exact diagnosis has to be made for further treatment.

 

Progress, prognosis

 

By not exposing the existent liver spots to direct sunlight, they may fade away. Nonetheless, in most cases, they still stay on face. They may also go away after giving birth or stopping the use of contraceptives. However, many of them last as well.

 

Treatment

 

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and apply sun block cream when necessary. Apply hydroquinone cream on the area with the liver spots. Sometimes, tretinoin, a member of the vitamin A group, and steroid cream are used together.
