[Colorectal cancer] Who is easily attacked by colorectal cancer in general?
[2007-09-19 10:06] (1,783)

Similar to many different cancers, the incidence of colorectal cancer appears to be related to both genetic factors and environmental factors. Risk factors of colorectal cancer include age, family medical history, congenital factor, bad food habits like intake of highly saturated fat and low-grade fiber material, etc., heavy drinking and prior history of inflammatory bowel disease in the past, etc.

If colorectal cancer is detected at a young age, however, it is possibly secondary to heredity. Therefore, all the family members including his/her brother and sister need to undergo the examination. It is because 25% of colorectal cancer occur in persons with high risk (higher risk group), 15-20% of which represents colorectal cancer patients whose family member(s) had same cancer in the past.

For example, it is said that the probability of an American to have colorectal cancer during his life is 1/50. However, in case one of the family members including parents, sister and brother or family in a direct line had colorectal cancer in the past, the rate of its incidence increases 2-3 times. In case at least two of the family members in a direct line, however, had colorectal cancer, its risk reaches approx. 8 times, representing 1 patient per 6.

Aside from family history genetic factors also play a role in the development of colorectal cancer. Approx. 5% of colorectal cancers are related with the genetic diseases such as HNPCC (hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer) and FAP (familial adenomatous polyposis).

Also, the risk for colorectal cancer is increased in patients who have suffered from inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis etc. over a long period of time, or who has cancer in the other areas such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, thyroid cancer, etc.
