Liver Cancer

The most common liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma which accounts for its high prevalence rate domestically. It mostly occurs in patients that have hepatitis B or C. Its prognosis has been considerably improved since a variety of treatment methods have been developed.

 

Definition

 

Liver cancer that starts in liver cells of the hepatic parenchyma.

 

Symptom

 

In most cases, the patient cannot feel any symptom. In many cases the cancer is detected by accident from patients with hepatitis when they undergo the periodic ultrasound examination, etc.

 

Cause, conditions and physiological

 

It is known that viral hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are risk factors. .

 

Diagnosis

 

Examinations such as abdominal computed tomography, hepatic artery angiography, ultrasound examination, and alpha-fetoprotein are required.

 

Progress, Prognosis

 

The treatment varies depending on the size, quantity, functional condition of the liver, and subsequently its prognosis becomes variable.  According to the recent domestic report, 5-year survival rate exceeds 50% or more owing to a variety of treatment methods.

 

Treatment

 

Surgery for liver cancer includes liver resection and percutaneous hepatic artery embolization a procedure where the hepatic artery is deliberately blocked. Other surgical procedures that may be needed include percutaneous alcohol injection into the lesion, cauterization by microwave, high-frequency therapy, etc.

 

Preventions

 

The patients who have hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are required to undergo diagnostic tests for the liver regularly. Most of the hepatocellular carcinomas showing no symptoms at its early stage cannot be detected in any other way. Furthermore, once detected at its early stage, it can be treated successfully. That is why the regular visits for diagnostic tests are essential.
